Welcome to the Museum of Cultural History

The Museum of Cultural History presents its extensive collection of medieval objects, focusing on sacred sculptures, important archaeological finds from the Seehausen monastery, and objects from the history of law, such as the chopped-off hands of two Prenzlau mayors convicted of treason.
Further town and regional history is presented based on selected focus points, including the guild system, Prenzlau as a garrison town, or the upheavals of the 19th century.
The exhibition on the region’s cultural history is supplemented by two separate areas dedicated to classicist landscape painter Jakob Philipp Hackert from Prenzlau, who was a friend of Goethe, and to Friederike Luise, born in Prenzlau, who later became Queen of Prussia.
Special exhibitions on supra-regional cultural-historical subjects and art as well as participation in Kulturland Brandenburg projects complete the museum’s offering. See our event schedule for current special exhibitions.
A tour of the museum will impress you with the great exhibits as well as the architecture of one of the best-preserved monasteries in north-eastern Germany. The elaborately restored cloisters, the refectory with its murals, and the sacristy with its delicate columns and unique incidence of light are some highlights of medieval monastic architecture. The new gallery space in the former scullery with its combination of historical building structure and modern architectural elements is another special sight.
Enjoy an audio-visual tour in German or English or book a guided tour in advance.
We will organise project days for school groups.
